Signs of the Times

Life in Los Angeles has been pretty interesting since last Tuesday. It's not every Sunday that we go to church with police cars parked around the building and members of the priesthood stationed as sentries at each point of entry. Our combined sacrament meeting primary program was wonderful, and thanks to the efforts of those sentries, it was uninterrupted.

Nonetheless, it was a little surreal to be told by the stake president at the conclusion of the services to hastily head home, and take advantage of the "window of opportunity" to leave the church property without incident. The various exits out of the parking lot were open at that point, but may not be later.

This article here is a pretty good summary of what has been going on. Note -- the LA Times and the other local media report the protests as "boisterous" and "generally non-violent". It's amazing what passes as "boisterous" these days.

This has been our first real encounter with Anti-Mormonism. And it has been faith-building.

I've been reading about all the "excitement" that has been going on in California. It is the ultimate irony. I'm glad that church members have reacted with such grace and strength.
As I was preparing a talk last week, I read the sermon on the mount where Christ talks about "blessed are they who are persecuted for my sake". It brought me comfort.
Good luck over these next few weeks. Hopefully all the hoopla will calm down soon. I find it silly that they'd be wasting so much time and resources on protesting something that is already over and done with. Why not move on to the next thing and finding another way to pass gay marriage?

Or just accept that it shouldn't be passed at all....but alas, that would foil satan's plan. Apparently we need everyone to accept what goes on in the bedroom, whether it's right or wrong. Good thing we have the knowledge of who's plan will ultimately come out on top.

Good post, Jon. Hang in there. I'm sure it will start to die down in time(for now), but it is a little scary for what could go down in the future..

The Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done" (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 4:540).
