1st Day of Many

Lucas had his first day of Kindergarten this past Wednesday. He did great. He was very excited the day before and the morning of. He was pretending to play school at home and getting all ready for the first day. When I dropped him off he began to get teary-eyed. This is typical for him (especially when I am the one taking him). Jon was going to take him but had a conference call that morning. As soon as Lucas went with his teacher and classmates he was fine. Typical for him as well.

Kindergarten is all day. Starts at 8 and ends at 2:30. He gets a morning recess and a 40-minute lunch (including 20 minutes of play time). When I picked Lucas up from school I asked him how it was. He replied, "I thought it was going to be short, but it was long." I told him, "Yep, it is a long day but at least you are here having fun instead shopping with mom all day. " We both laughed at that. He seemed to like that answer. When we got home, I started to ask him what he did. He would reply with one word answers. Finally he said "We drew pictures. We didn't even write (imagine him shaking his head), it was easy."

After school on Friday we were driving to the park to meet some friends. I asked him how his day was and what he did that day. Again, one word answers. I felt like I was playing 20 questions. Finally, he yells, while throwing his arms out, "Mom, No more school questions!" I started laughing and then he did too.

Later that night when I went to lie down with him for bed*. He turned to me and said, "All right, I want to talk." He had this huge grin on his face. And so he began to to tell me all about school. How much fun it is and how they do math, reading, and art, and they had a scavenger hunt around the whole school. These are the moments that I cherish -- when it is just he and I, and he opens up and talks.

*Just in case you are wondering, our routine for bed is either Jon or I will lie down or sit next to Luke's bed. This is our special one-on-one time that we get almost every night. This is usually when Lucas will open up and tell us about his thoughts and his experiences he had that day. After he talks, he usually rolls over and tells us to leave. Then he goes to sleep.

that is so precious! I love that he wanted to share it all with you, but in his own time.

I love that he took control of his situation and shared everything with you on his own terms. I guess sometimes kids just need to take a step back before they reflect.

That's sweet.

Wow - you have a kindergartner. Is that weird. I love the "no more school questions" comment. He sure has a mind of his own.
